Here
in her 74th year
I take you
from your wheelchair
and move you
around the garden
like a living
chess piece
as we chase
the sun
in adoration
of its rays
us two
human sunflowers
worshiping
its every motion
longing for
the sun that is to come.
*******
The day before we lay in bliss in our garden of sunshine. The next day the sun refused to shine despite our adoration. We went for a meal in our favourite Spanish restaurant in West Hampstead where we ate amongst sunshine trapped in leaves and passing breezes.
As I pushed her home(I’m always pushing her around) she mused to herself “I wonder when I will die? ” “What...! ” I gasped. “Well, I have to die sometime! ” “Well, don’t die now! ” I ordered her and promised her a garden of sunshine and a new poem to look forward to.
This...is that...new poem.
