Alison Cassidy - EARS

'Friends, Romans, countrymen,
lend me your ears...'

Lend me your ears?
You can have them for nothing.

Ears, ears, ears,
I'm so sick of ears!
I've been making them all week.
Squirrels ears,
coyotes ears,
ears for the spunky snow-wolf
'Don't you think they're a bit long?
They make me look like a rabbit! '
You want shorter ears?
You MAKE shorter ears.

Mouses' ears too.
(or should that be mice's ears?)

I hate sewing,
it fills me with fear.
But once a year
my Janome purrs
day and night,
and spools and spools
of thread are filled
and mischievous needles
with minuscule eyes
are threaded
with difficulty
and bespectacled concentration.

I think I need a break.
Break a leg perhaps?

You're right,
tonight's Opening Night,
and tomorrow I can put away the sewing machine
for another ear...
