Penny Hemans - Contemplation

2014-11-07 3

I leant on Dunnottar Castle's field-stile
Lingering by the ruin's entrance
Watching fat sheep on green hillocks
Waddle
Their fluffing woollen fleeces
Swinging
Like greatcoats in the wind
This way
That way
Shifting their heaviness
Behind the gusting air
Carrying their unborn lambs
A caravan of innocents
Preparing for the birth journey
And I think of Prestonpans
As Jonnie Cope's men
Slept
While Charlie's boys
Crept in for the slaughter
