We promised each other that we’d stay together
Friends, just friends, for ever, and ever
But in this world, what is forever?
We were truthful and needed security
Safe when together it was a natural purity
It was a god-send, a love so beautiful.
We promised to write and keep in touch,
Clinging to friendship – it wasn’t much.
But we were certain, and that was enough.
I wonder when I’ll see you once more?
Today? Tomorrow? By the sandy shore?
I know you wonder the same.
I missed you so I wrote you a letter
For a time, sure, it made me feel better.
But a letter is not your face.
A letter is not your smile, making the rainbows shine through our hearts,
A letter is not your friendship, strong like string and like the finest art,
A letter is not your gentle kiss, soft upon my cheek,
A letter is not the loneliness from you I feel each week,
A letter is just a desperate attempt, to speak to you again.
