Scarlett Treat - Subway Silence, Revised

2014-11-07 0

Tattered gratings, scattered around, belch steam
Upward into the early morning subway silence.
Businessmen rush by, deadlines nearing,
With their briefcases containing someone's lifeblood,
Clutched desperately to their chests.

Haughty women, wearing their size 4's, dressed to the nines,
Click a sharp tattoo with their stiletto heels,
Wading through the sidewalk trash
As though strutting the catwalks of Armani.

But no one seems to see the hungry children
With their unwashed bodies and ice cold hands,
Staring through dirty windows,
Eyes begging, longing to see a friendly face,
Dying to hear a sound of love in the subway silence.
