Alison Cassidy - Poets for Peace

2014-11-07 1

Terrorism, Nazism, Fundamentalism
all fueled by literalism.
The cockroach must be ground underfoot
there is no need for remorse
because all that has been killed
is a cockroach, after all.

The poet uses metaphor
to give space for otherness,
so the cockroach of the poet
is beyond cockroach -
it is father, son, lover,
doctor, teacher, factory worker.
If you kill this cockroach
you will feel remorse.
