Each time I pass this street
My soul rolls back
To that dusty day.
It happened sometime between
This painful end of time
And two years of grey.
The smoke eddied to the beat
Of the engine's drone
And disfigured steel.
And he gave one last wink
As he lied there splayed out
Beneath the car wheel.
Everytime it passes over me,
Everytime I forget
That my dog is really gone,
I see those pawprints
Printed on the now-dried cement
And my world again
Comes undone.
