K. Jared Hosein - (People) So I'm Indian...

2014-11-07 6

Does it offend you
That the same Paintbrush that
Swirls the golden twilight sky
Is the same One that painted
The complexion of this brown guy?

Does it irk you
That I have skin the colour of earth
And how gladly I flaunt it about?
Does it annoy you
That my voice is of a different tone,
Does it mute the words
That spring from my mouth?

Does it anger you
When I worship God
That I am so strangely clothed?
When you see us
Walking happily on your sidewalks,
Are we loathed?

Does it make your blood boil
That we sing our songs
In a language you don't understand?
Are you urged
To put us on broken-down banana boats
And ship us back to our India land?

So I'm Indian,
Am I that different from you?
Whatever you may think,
I know that I am beautiful
And that I shine,
Because you see,
We are just different fruits of the same tree,
And this tree is as yours
As it is mine.
