I look down your gun
With this longing-dog stare,
Splayed out before you
And as the war wreaking near
Just seems like swaying red curtains
During a wheatfield gale,
You question me.
I have a home,
I am a father
And I carry my children in my heart.
I carry their hearts all interlocked,
It keeps my soul from tearing apart.
I am loved,
Much more so than yesterday,
It breathes across the ocean
And through the fires of this fray,
It cuts through the starless darkness
And it helps me find my way.
Just remember this
Before you end all I am
And all I ever will be
Because I know you are loved too
And you carry your children's hearts also.
I have no hatred for you,
It is okay,
And I understand
So take this stride,
And, friend,
I will shake your hand
When you meet me on the other side.
