Yesterday was the last straw
I hopped into the car,
Put the top down, let the wind brush my hair.
Drove all the way to Shenandoah,
Half-naked, broke and without a care.
So I slept in the open on that night
On a mattress of grass beneath a ceiling of satin
And dreamt of winged horses
And sirens speaking in sensuous Latin.
When I woke up,
That sullen morning I awoke more empty
Than the pockets in my jeans.
Just the day before I was in a stronghold,
An urban prince in his teens.
I took a saunter down a yellow-leaved dusty road
Where a church sect gathered at a riverside.
They were singing songs of worship
That billowed over the river's unmoving tide.
I darted and joined in with them,
The priest held my head under
And his words were rife.
Fallen, soggy yellow leaves on the river-bed
Told me
What a way to start my new life.
