Herbert Nehrlich - Amber Dreams

2014-11-07 2

Guess what I saw
down, in the bottom of
my Munich Stein,
it was the clear reflection
of one who's had a few.
And there was promise
in the flecks of suds
and softly, amber shone the light
as if to say I welcome you.
And I was pleased, of course,
as kind acceptance is
in our brave world, so rare
thus it came natural, my smile
and just one tiny, still civil smack
with lips that were such connoisseurs,
expressed its ambience rather well.
A touch of dreaming then occurred
and from the depths beneath the head
of snow white foam, she rose with grace
and opened wide her arms, her legs
by nature of design were bound from birth,
it was a mermaid of the most exquisite beauty.
And those of you who don't believe,
whose mothers married doubting Thomases,
go right ahead and laugh your silly grin
and drink your sterile gin, or Vodka made from grain,
or smoke the dope from down the street
and travel in the summer to Afghanistan
to grow and taste those poppyseeds
in fields of glory under harsh and cruel suns.
But don't come crying back to Daddy then again
to suckle juices from the hop and barley flower
you have forfeitted and betrayed the little maid
and she has chosen me above the infidels.
