No one dares dream of beach houses
While walking on these dirty city streets
In the misty sullen rain
Where the children smile despite some new despair
That is always lurking around the corner.
A mother will drive home from work
And brush her hair
While listening to police sirens
Invade the open air.
Drug deals and daily violence
Mar the already bleak surroundings,
But someone will help an old lady
Cross the street
And all spirits will rise above the sadness
Of struggling survival.
