Gillian.E. Shaw - Out in France

There was no compensation
for the soldiers of The Great War:
Returning, they got on with life
there was really nothing more.
For they didn't speak about it
neither moan, complain nor dwell
because they were the victors
and had survived 'Bloody Hell! '

So many of them went out there
a generation gave their youth
fighting side by side to victory
oblivious of the truth:
So... let us not forget them
Britain's finest and her best
that we could see a better day
fulfillment of their quest.

I wonder if you can name them?
Those from your family
who fought in the mud whilst serving
their King and country:
For innocence is but fleeting
and a lot of time has passed
as they faced that hell together
in the trenches, out in France.
