SOUTH AFRICA - Forced marriages still a reality in South Africa

2014-11-06 5

In South Africa, people are increasingly questioning some of the country's traditional customs. One of the most controversial is ukuthwala: the practice of abducting young girls and forcing them into marriage, often - but not always - with their parents' consent. It's most prevalent in rural areas and the girls involved are frequently under-aged. Our reporters met some of the women affected, who are telling authorities this so-called custom is nothing else but a form of rape.
