For the last five years, Nicaragua's government has promoted a program to help the environment as well as farmers and farming cooperatives by supplying them with high quality, heirloom seeds for crops native to the region. In this way, the government helps to protect the environment from the dangers of GMO seeds entering the mix and endangering native crops.
