Stephen Warren Williams - How Many Things Are Still Left (The End Period)

2014-11-04 4

how many things are
are still left?
felt but never said
said but never felt
how many springs are
are still left like ore?
smelt iron streams
burning but never fed
spelled out somewhere
but just maybe never read

oh but to have been
a poet
in times when poets
were only a few
those who felt
and made others
feel and know it
before those
surely like me
and surely like you

before we became
fools in a game
when to be or not
like we
was so exciting and so new
and the Beatles poets
could say make millions
with the simple words
to simply
'Let It Be'

and yet now
so much the same
fame and fortune
for us is all lost
and almost certain
quite through
in the game
before our first dice
were ere to be tossed

education has made
us more equal
and the media
has made poets all null
tv realties
seek only a sequel
to hope for
the mindless to cull

nothing about Love
hasn't already been
written
nothing about death
hasn't already been
said
nothing for which one
perchance may be smitten
nothing new put into
anyone else's head

we poets are
nothing but liars
who lie to ourselves
and to many
and more than a few
do just what we
can do
and one more
would be
two much
aplenty

and two more
would be
too much
ado
about nothing
two no one
but you
so if it's
fortune and fame
draws you into the game
or just an audience
look you won't really
find any

not a one really
till you die
if you are
very
very
lucky
the end
period
