Yeah thanks
For the Welcome to Country
But I don’t need it
You see
I was born here
And so were my parents
And both sets of grand-parents
Except Grandfather
He was a German Jewish Pom
Shipped over
When he was just a boy
Another boat person
Except
He did it legally
And waited in line
Like I do
At the supermarket
With everyone else
No queue jumping for me
That would be
Un-Australian
If you did want to
Welcome me to country
You should have been there
At Princess Anne’s Hospital
In Mount Lawley
Fifty odd years ago
When I was born
Or maybe
You should have been there
In bed
Next to Mum and Dad
Nine months earlier
When I was conceived
No need to worry
About any smoking ceremony
You see
Mum and Dad
Would have had their own
Thanks anyway
But no thanks
