Tirupathi Chandrupatla - Passenger Pigeon Martha's Message

2014-10-29 15

Martha, the passenger pigeon
Breathed her last a century back
Last of her species she was
Living in a zoo without her mate.

Just over two centuries ago
Lived five billion of her kind
Their extinction's human-caused
A gross irresponsible act of man.

In their heyday migrating
They spread their wing wide
Darkening sky for days together
A lively sight indeed to imagine.

Annihilation of nature's bounty's
A systematic continuous operation
The process' rapid and dangerous
An extinct species worries no more.

Birds're our friends, their welfare
Indicates the health of our environment
If they're happy our lives're sound
Killing them leads to our own demise.

There're many other nature's lives
Ready to leave the world for ever
Let's heed to Martha's final message
And determine to conserve what we have.
