Mommas' heels tapped a tune
on the hard slate floor
and it echoed through the hall
of the courthouse.
She led me by the hand
to the basement
and the only public
toilets down town.
Floors and walls of tile,
metal doored cubicles,
urinals in a row
against the pale green wall.
Porcelain gleaming white,
pink disk drain-placed
smelled faintly peppermint
and strongly of piss.
