Autumn comes back around
and all the leaves fall to the ground.
The air turns cold but the sky’s still blue.
Will you fall to me as I fall to you?
It was where we first met, under the sycamore tree.
You were nineteen and I was twenty three.
If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be here.
And when the tree colors change I can still hear you whisper in my ear.
The leaves blow away, the years do too.
I wish the Lord let you stay, or let me go too.
My beards turned grey, but years I probably got a few.
But when the leaves change, oh how I miss you.
I remember that day clear in my mind.
You were reading poetry as I crept up from behind.
You turned around and caught my eyes,
the autumn leaves were blowing to the skies.
I could have sat there for eternity,
and when the sun set you kissed me.
I thought I would always be alone.
I hope you can hear me through this poem.
I sit outside and light my cigarette.
I gaze at the stars after the sunset.
I feel you looking down at me as I look up at you.
Will you fall to me as I fall to you?
