Carolyn Brunelle - Warm Blankets

2014-10-29 35

Some things are kept forever
cherished and tucked away in the attic of memory
protected as dearest heirlooms from spoilage of time.
Fireflies on a hot summer's eve
Autumn and the smell of burning leaves;
hot fudge sundaes and homemade pies
cherry cokes and burgers and fries.
Proms and dresses and vinyl rock n' roll
tons of homework, thank god for study hall,
the rescue of a pet in the middle of a storm
stood up to a bully so a sibling wasn't harmed;
grew to a woman who still doesn't fuss, and married
that cute boy always saved me a seat on the bus.
These moments stoke embers and light a fire
as they play out from yesterday's stage;
become the warm blankets
I wrap around me in the chill of my old age.
