Police in Herat say two of their colleagues were killed when a pair of unidentified gunmen rode up to a checkpoint ..and opened fire.
Many more were injured in the ensuing gun battle, which also left the gunmen dead.
(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) DR. MOHAMMAD RAFIQ saying:
"We have received four dead bodies, two of them are policemen and two others are armed insurgents. We also received fifteen wounded people including civilians from today's attack."
The last U.S. and British forces left Herat on Monday.
As the international coalition ends it mission in Afghanistan, attacks like this are becoming commonplace.
In 2015, it will be up to Afghan forces to maintain the peace alone.
