A willow leaf flutters in the wind,
loosens and drops into the thrusting
current below.
Whirling, pirouetting, tumbling
like an acrobat, like a ballerina,
it is carried forth.
The tree from which it came calls after:
Come back, resist,
come home. The river
will destroy you.
The willow leaf calls back:
The river is wise;
I've heard he knows the way to the ocean.
The willow tree weeps.
The river laughs.
The little leaf wonders
what's around the bend.
