“We will not run scared” – Canada’s PM Harper

...A full minute of applause for Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers as Canadian parliament resumes.

Just 24 hours earlier Vickers reportedly shot and killed the gunman who broke into Ottawa's main parliament building, firing more than 30 shots in the halls.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper told lawmakers that Canada would stand firm.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER SAYING:

"We will be vigilant, but we will not run scared. We will be prudent, but we will not panic."

But the events have shaken the normally tranquil capital city.

Police are on edge. One man was arrested as Harper was laying a wreath in memory of Nathan Cirillo, the soldier who was fatally shot earlier in the day.

Harper has vowed to redouble the country's fight against extremist violence... but Canadians are now dealing with the reality that they are not immune.
