US President Barack Obama has telephoned Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to offer US assistance after shootings in and around the Canadian parliament on Wednesday.

“I pledged, as always, to make sure that our national security teams were coordinating very closely, given not only that Canada is one of our closest allies in the world, but they are our neighbours and our friends,” Obama said.

“It’s very important for us to recognise that, when it comes to dealing with terrorist activity, Canada and the US have to be entirely in sync. We have in the past and I’m confident we will continue to be in the future,” the US president continued.

Earlier this month the Canadian parliament voted in favour of joining a US-led military campaign to combat ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) militants in Iraq.
