Finding just one snake in your home is enough to cause fear and panic. One family in Regina, Canada was living with 102 Plains Garter Snakes.
The relatives contacted staffers at the Salthaven West Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Centre after finding a number of snakes in their basement. As the family inspected the rest of their house, they discovered some more in the kitchen and bedrooms.
Salthaven’s Director of Rehabilitation, Megan Lawrence and her partner arrived at the home to investigate.
Lawrence explained “They were starting to end up everywhere in the house... For the most part they were in tight spaces. Cracks in the floors, cracks in the walls, between boxes, underneath things — anywhere they could get into basically.”
It didn’t take them long to find 56 snakes. That’s the number they left with but Lawrence was quite sure there were more lurking around the home.
Garter Snakes usually go underground at this time of year while hibernating. Lawrence suspects the snakes had regularly used the Regina home as their safe place during the cold months.
She is likely right as the homeowner subsequently dropped off dozens of additional snakes. So far, 102 slithery creatures have been removed from the house.
The snakes are being cared for at the Salthaven West Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Centre.
