Denver Police are warning parents that marijuana-laced candy could be turning up in kids’ trick or treat bags this year.
As the substance is now legal in Colorado and pot-laced treats are becoming increasingly common, there could be some mix-ups.
Their warnings aren’t based on anything bad that’s happened or even rumors that are circulating.
They just want to make sure all parents realize that items like marijuana lollipops, gummy candies, and fruit chews are out there.
Also causing concern is that a lot of times it’s nearly impossible to tell the laced treats from the regular ones, as existing candy is often repurposed.
Given the expense and effort involved in manufacturing and packaging candy from scratch, it’s a fairly common practice to just infuse and reseal what’s already available.
Typically, off brands are used.
It’s recommended that parents continue to inspect their children’s candy hauls and remove anything that has a punctured, ripped or otherwise suspicious-looking wrapper.
Tossing anything that has a questionable or unknown manufacturer could also prove helpful.
The department has posted a video that includes information and tips on both its news website and YouTube.
