The calm before the storm.

Category 4 Hurricane Gonzalo is bearing down on Bermuda. It's swirling around 300 miles south-southwest of the island. And the National Hurricane Center says it's packing winds of up to 140 miles per hour.

Forecasters say heavy rain and winds will ravage the island Friday, with full hurricane conditions to follow.

They're calling it one of the strongest storms ever to threaten Bermuda -- a popular tourist destination still recovering from the recent fury of Tropical Storm Fay.

Residents have been battening down... preparing for Gonzalo to come ashore.
