According to a study from researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, even though Mars One has been pushing for humans to colonize Mars by 2025, the initial astronauts might starve to death.

There is no way for the first people who arrive on Mars to return to Earth, and the calories that the crew would need to be replaced that might put the crew at risk.

Mars One has gotten over 200 thousand applications for the 25 to 40 spots onboard their manned mission to our neighboring red planet.

The CEO of Mars One, Bas Lansdorp, says that their study was based on incomplete data. He does however agree that one aspect they have to seriously contend with is replacement parts.

Based on statistics from the International Space Station, unless there is a follow-up mission to Mars within two years of the first one, there is a strong possibility that a crucial component would need to be replaced and might put the crew at risk.

Estimates from the study show that around 62 percent of the first cargo load would have to be spare parts if a 2 year resupply mission was not planned.
