A 10-month-old baby is alive and recovering after being pinned underneath her deceased father for several days.
Deputies in Louisiana were dispatched to the family’s home after the infant’s young brother, reportedly around 4 years of age, ran to the neighbors' house to tell them his father had died.
The baby, who has since been identified as Betty Jean, was dehydrated and her skin was covered in blisters. (1,3,1) She also had an indentation on her forehead.
Reportedly she was pinned against the wall and under the body of her dad on the bed. Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers explained “It looked like he was sitting on the side of the bed on his computer, fell backwards and died. The fact that he fell on her and made no attempt to get up tells me he died instantly when he fell on top of her.”
Rivers believes the father, 43-year-old Jason Fields passed away of sudden cardiac arrest. No drugs or foul play is suspected at this time.
Betty was flown to the University Health Center in Shreveport. According to a family member, she suffered from a seizure following her arrival but was playing with a toy later on.
The older brother was not injured. Fields' wife was in jail at the time of his passing. A judge has allowed for her early release so she can care for the kids.
