A convict who spent 15 years behind bars was recently freed. He was shot only 15 minutes following his release.
The 33-year-old man had walked out of Otisville Correctional Facility in Orange County, New York after carrying out his sentence for first-degree assault. The victim had reportedly been picked up outside the prison by a sedan and was shot near a railroad station where he was to catch a ride to New York City.
Several bullets struck him in the upper body. Two suspects sped away from the scene. The victim managed to attract the attention of a staffer who was working on the ticket machine.
He was flown to a hospital where he underwent surgery. Regional, state and local police departments responded to the train station to investigate.
During the manhunt that followed, fearful residents in the small community locked their doors and administrators at Otisville Elementary School issued a lockdown.
Law enforcement officials were stationed on the grounds and all outdoor activities were cancelled. Police later arrested two men in connection to the crime; Jerome A. Mack and Edgar Wilson, who are both aged 35.
They are now facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and attempted murder in the second degree. The victim is expected to recover.
