Hong Kong protest movement gathers new momentum

Their numbers had trailed off over the past week, but pro-democracy protesters are back on the streets of Hong Kong.

Thousands are camped out after the government broke off talks aimed at resolving a row over elections for a new leader in 2017.

One student protester said: “It seems like they don’t want to have a conversation with us. But I think this amount of people show that we really want to solve the problem with the government.”

Another said: “I think we stand very little chance, but I think we have to struggle, right? We have to keep the numbers up and keep it for quite a period of time.”

The government had earlier imposed a deadline for protesters to clear the streets, and it is uncertain how authorities will react to the new sit-ins.
