Turns out nobody has any idea.
Footage of a polar bear ambling nonchalantly across a Tokyo road has spread like wildfire across social media with users wracking their brains as to whether the bear is real and if it is, what on Earth it’s doing in the Japanese capital.
Theories behind the presence of the unusually placid animal and its beskirted blonde owner have ranged from the improbable – it’s a Lady Gaga PR stunt – to the bizarre – it’s an ice-cream advert.
The only clue are the letters ‘LALSH’ emblazoned on the shirt of the ‘polar bear”s handler, the name of an unspecified Russian group who wrote on their Facebook page that there would be a ‘reveal’ in Shinjuku on 24 October.
It seems highly unlikely that the animal was a real polar bear.
Polar bears will almost always try to avoid human contact and if they are provoked or fearful for their safety, the results are not pretty.
