South Korean protesters led by North Korean defectors released huge balloons on Friday (October 10), containing anti-Pyongyang leaflets, that were intended to drift across the border into the reclusive state.

About 50 protesters at the border city of Paju launched 10 balloons containing 200,000 leaflets, 1,000 U.S. dollars, 400 DVDs and 300 books showing life in South Korea.

The balloons were released as hopes were raised of an improvement in relations between the two countries, following a surprise visit of a top-ranking North Korean delegation to the South last week.

The visit resulted in an agreement to resume a high-level dialogue that had been suspended for seven months as military tensions on the divided peninsula soared.
