The striking Sunrise Kempinski Hotel is slated to open next month in China. The exterior of the building looks like an orb overlooking the waters of Yanqi Lake.
It was drawn up by Shanghai Huadu Architect Design Company. Staffers there incorporated a number of traditional Chinese elements into the appearance.
The luxury hotel looks like a rising sun, which is meant to represent the country’s growing economy. Looking at the structure from the side, viewers can see a resemblance to a scallop, symbolizing fortune.
The entrance is designed to appear like the mouth of a fish, which draws a reference to prosperity in Chinese culture. The luxury hotel offers 306 guest rooms and suites over 21 floors.
There are also fitness areas, meeting rooms, a kids club, spas, bars and restaurants. The exterior surface is comprised of more than 10,000 angled glass panels that reflect the color of the sky, a nearby mountain and the lake.
When it’s dark outside, the hotel lights up thanks to hydroelectric-powered LEDs. An international team of designers helped offer insight into Chinese culture to ensure the building appropriately represents the country.
