The winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize for Literature is French writer Patrick Modiano.

Born in 1945 Modiano’s literature focuses on his childhood in Paris, his absent Jewish father, of which he heard many disturbing stories, and his Belgian mother, an actress, who was frequently away on theatrical tours.

As a result Modiano became very close to his brother Rudy, who fell ill and died at the age of ten.

Rudy’s death marked the end of childhood.

Modiano dedicated all his works between 1968 and 1982 to the memory of his lost brother.

His first novel La Place de l’Etoile was published in 1968.
