History has been made by the first woman to give birth after undergoing a womb transplant.

The 36-year-old Swedish woman was born without a uterus, but she received a donated one from an older friend who previously went through menopause,

Thanks to the successful womb transplant she was able to have a child of her own, which was delivered by C-section last month.

This medical breakthrough is significant for infertile women, who have been left without a uterus because of a birth defect or after cancer treatment, but still want to have their own child.

Before, the only option for parenthood would have been going through a surrogate, but the recent birth is a promising success story.

Although the baby was born prematurely, reports say that both the infant and mother are healthy.

Professor Matts Braennstroem of the University of Gothenburg, who led the operation, is quoted as saying: “Our success is based on more than 10 years of intensive animal research and surgical training by our team and opens up the possibility of treating many young females worldwide that suffer from uterine infertility.”

Other previous womb transplants didn’t work out so well, with one being rejected by the recipient, and another leading to miscarriages.
