John Galliano, Christian Dior's former star designer, has been hired by fashion brand Maison Martin Margiela as its new creative director.

Galliano, one of the most flamboyant and successful designers in the fashion industry, was fired from Dior in 2011 by parent company LVMH, after a video showed him making anti-semitic remarks in a Paris bar.

Since then, the designer has undergone treatment for drugs and alcohol, and worked briefly as a designer for Oscar de la Renta in 2013.

Galliano had won praise from fashion critics for his theatrical, romantic shows at Dior and for his creative designs for his John Galliano brand, which is still owned and run by LVMH, the world's biggest luxury group.

He replaces the brand's founder Martin Margiela, who left his fashion house in 2009 and has since been led by a team of designers.

Galliano's first show for his new gig will be in January for Haute Couture week in Paris.
