UKRAINIANS THROW POLITICIANS IN THE TRASH
Activists in Ukraine are targeting politicians they say are corrupt or supported former president Viktor Yanukovych before his ouster back in February by throwing them in dumpsters and rubbish bins ... there have been a growing number of these political actions over the past few weeks, illustrating growing anger and frustration towards parliamentary officials. More often than not the activists film the so called Trash Bucket Challenge on their mobile phone and then share the footage on social networks under the hashtag of the same name.
Most of the time activists will simply toss the politician in the trash and then leave them to pull themselves out… but sometimes things turn violent. MP Viktor Pylypyshyn was ganged up on by a group of protesters late September. As we can see here, they were particularly revved up; throwing rubbish at him, and also dousing him in red paint, denouncing his role in the brutal repression of the Euromaidan protests.
According to the International Business Times, the Trash Bucket Challenges are mostly carried out by members of the far right coalition “Right Sector”, and in Ukraine these actions are known as “Lustration”, something which dates back to the Soviet Union era, and means the purging of corrupt politicians from office; the stated aim being to demonstrate that no-one is above the law, not even politicians.
