The Red Cross says one of its aid workers was killed on Thursday when an artillery shell landed near its office in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine.
The victim was a Swiss national, and the Ukrainian foreign ministry condemned pro-Russian separatists for firing on the area. The ICRC office is less than a kilometre from the rebel-occupied public security headquarters, and the separatists said it was Ukrainian forces that had fired the shell.
While Ukraine’s president insists the ceasefire is holding, the fighting for Donetsk airport has never stopped, and in recent days has intensified as the pro-Russians try to wrest it from Kyiv’s hands. The Ukrainians claim they have repulsed two serious attacks and accuse the separatists of using the ceasefire to increase their territorial gains.
