People love snacks and according to Nielsen’s recent Global Survey of Snacking, 45 percent of humans worldwide are so fond of them, they eat the nibbles in place of meals.

Mostly, people swap out breakfast, but the lunch and dinner numbers are strong as well.

At least 40 percent said their afternoon and evening food choices are more likely to be seen in a vending machine than on a dinner table.

Globally chocolate is still the preferred snack with fresh fruit a close second. However, savory flavors are gaining ground rapidly.

Worldwide, sales of grab-and-go items like pita chips, yogurt, and beef jerky are on the rise.

Nutritionists caution that while many of the options are on the healthier side, it doesn’t mean that they’ll keep a person satisfied for long.

What may result is more frequent eating, offsetting any calorie cutting benefits opting for the small noshes may have provided.

As far as snacking in general goes, over 90 percent of people in the 60 countries surveyed do it daily.

Preferences range from region to region, but in the US chips, chocolate and cheese are among the most reached for quick bites.
