Thousands of pro-democracy protesters have remained on the streets in central Hong Kong refusing to heed calls for them to go home.
Tuesday morning dawned with many of the mainly students stockpiling supplies and erecting makeshift barricades.
Although riot police used pepper spray and tear gas at the weekend, they have now withdrawn. Both sides appear to want to avoid further clashes for the moment.
However throughout the night rumours spread among the protesters than police were preparing to move again – especially on the eve of Wednesday’s anniversary of the Communist Party’s foundation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
The protests flared last Friday due to China’s intention to limit the choice of candidates in Hong Kong’s 2017 leadership elections.
