U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to announce his resignation on Thursday.
A Justice Department official says Holder will make a formal statement about leaving his post at a White House event later today.
The official also says Holder "has no immediate plans once he steps down."
He is the nation's first black U.S. attorney general.
His six year tenure was marked by several high profile cases, including the "Fast and Furious" scandal, the controversial shooting death of Trayvon Martin, and civil unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.
