During a meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn in New York, U.S. President Barack Obama said the "cooperation and leadership" of Ethiopia in fighting extremist group, al Shabaab in Somalia is "making a difference as we speak."

The group, which aims to impose its own strict version of Islam, controlled Mogadishu and the southern region of Somalia from 2006 until 2011. It was forced out of the capital by peacekeeping forces - including soldiers from Ethiopia - deployed by the African Union (AU), who have launched a new offensive against the Islamists this year.
