The United States and partner nations have carried out the first air strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria, in what the Pentagon described as a new and far more complicated front in the battle against the ISIS militants.

The statement said the strikes are ongoing and involve a combination of fighter jets, bombers and Tomahawk missiles. No further details were given.

A US official said that Arab countries are involved in the strikes – namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Bahrain.

The US has already undertaken 174 air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq since mid-August.

Recently the House of Representatives approved a request by President Obaman to help arm and train moderate rebels in Syria.
