Scotland has decided: United Kingdom remains united as Scots vote NAE to independence

2014-09-22 43

With a turnout of well over 80 percent, Scottish voters have, by a 45 percent to 55 percent margin, rejected independence and will remain part of the UK, preserving a union that has lastest more than 300 years.

Independence advocates were saddened, but First Minister for Scotland Alex Salmond said the vote demonstrated democracy at its finest and congratulated the winning side, led by the UK’s former Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling.

Salmond called on UK politicians to make good on their vows to grant Scotland more powers and more autonomy and reminded the powers in London that 1.6 million Scots did in fact vote to break free from the UK.

UK leaders including Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy NIck Clegg both expressed relief and happiness that Scotland decided to stay in the union. A speech by the Queen is expected soon, and sources say Her Majesty will focus that message on reconciliation after what has been a grueling campaign.
