The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has agreed to hear an appeal by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi against his conviction for tax fraud in 2012.
His lawyer Piero Longo said that the ECHR had agreed to examine Berlusconi’s argument that he had been denied a fair trial in Italy.
Berlusconi was sentenced to four years imprisonment for masterminding a tax dodging scheme at his Mediaset company – later commuted to one year of community service.
He also lost his seat in the Senate and was barred from public office.
