Polls close, independence vote counting starts

STORY: Polling stations closed in Edinburgh on Thursday (September 18) evening after a day of voting in an historic referendum on Scottish independence.

Voting ended at 2100GMT with surveys suggesting Scots were almost equally divided in a referendum watched closely by Britain's allies, investors and restive regions at home and abroad.

According to a poll by YouGov carried out on the day of the referendum Support for Scottish independence amounted to 46 percent of the electorate with 54 percent wanting to stay in the United Kingdom,

YouGov contacted Scots it had previously canvassed in recent days and its survey is not akin to a full exit poll. Just under two weeks ago, it produced a poll that briefly put the independence campaign ahead, sending shock waves through the British establishment.
