An auction at the Kentucky State Fair recently set a record for the most expensive country ham when it sold for two million dollars.
The ham weighed just over 15 pounds, which amounts to a price of more than 125 thousand dollars per pound.
The expensive piece of meat took first prize at the Kentucky State Fair cured ham competition, and isn’t the first time that the country ham company Broadbent B&B Foods has taken home the blue ribbon.
The owner of the farm says that the ham, dry cured using only salt and smoke, usually sells for around sixty dollars a pound.
For the record setting price, a bid combined money from Republic Bank, Hermitage Farms, and Bridgeman Foods.
Hosted by the Kentucky Farm Bureau, high prices for the blue ribbon winning ham at the annual Kentucky Country Ham Breakfast and Auction have become a tradition, with all of the proceeds going to charity.
This is reportedly the seventh time that Republic Bank has won the country ham auction.
Since the Kentucky Farm Bureau started in 1964, they have raised over 8 point 85 million dollars for various charities including nonprofit groups that focus on education and healthcare.
