NEWS MEDIA URGED NOT TO SHOW ISIS VIDEOS
The #ISISMediaBlackout hashtag was started after the Islamic State extremist group posted a video online August 19, showing the beheading of American journalist James Foley. The hashtag is back trending on social networks with web users urging news media across the globe not to show images of the murder of British aid worker David Haines, so as not to contribute to terrorist propaganda.
The calls come as several media groups have published and aired extracts or screen shots from the Jihadist group`s latest video, of the beheading of David Haines. American news network CNN for example, Reuters press agency, and Italian daily La Reppublica have been criticized by web users who say they are doing exactly what the extremists want them to do. Some are going a step further than criticism, threatening to boycott these media outlets if they continue to show images released by the Islamic State militant group, also known as ISIS and ISIL.
But not everyone backs these calls for censorship. There is a small minority on social networks, opposing a media blackout on terrorist propaganda. Some web users feel it`s important to show these videos so people can fully take on board the barbarism and cowardice of Islamic State militants.
